About Sedation Dentistry

It is estimated that nearly one-half of the U.S. population does not see the dentist on a regular basis. Although other factors influence this, fear is one of the main reasons people avoid seeing the dentist. Most people have at least some underlying apprehension regarding dental treatment. For many people, however, the fear of dental treatment is so great that traditional dentistry is simply not an option. Whether due to childhood dental experiences or other past dental experiences, these deep emotions require a different approach. For many, oral conscious sedation provides an effective way to overcome these barriers and to obtain the dental treatment they need.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

This term refers to the use of oral medications to produce a state referred to as conscious sedation. Conscious sedation is a conscious state where the body maintains its own natural protective functions but mental alertness is decreased. A patient in this state can speak and respond to verbal cues and maintain their protective reflexes, but still remain very relaxed and comfortable during their appointment. Most patients will rest comfortably with their eyes closed during much of the appointment. Although patients remain conscious during the procedure, there is usually very little memory of the procedure following the appointment. This is due to the amnesic effect of the medication given.

Who Is A Candidate For Oral Sedation Dentistry

People who:

  • avoid dentists due to fear
  • have a fear of needles and shots
  • have problems getting numb
  • have very sensitive teeth and gums
  • have not seen the dentist in 5-30 years
  • have a high gag reflex
  • have advanced dental problems
  • desire to accomplish dentistry in fewer appoinments
How You Will Feel

Most people feel that they have slept through their appointment. They may remember taking the medication and then remember some as they are waking up and getting ready to leave the office. This amnesic effect may continue for several hours after the appointment.
